Don't Take Our Word For It: How to Judge a Good Bike Shop ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Posted on: | Category:

Buying a new bike or finding a mechanic you trust with your pride and joy is a big decision. Bikes are not cheap, and a bad setup can ruin your riding experience.

So, how do you sort the brilliant local bike shops from the box shifters? You do what we all do before buying anything these days. You check the reviews.

If a shop has a wall of great feedback, it is a fantastic start. We were having a look at our own Google Business page this morning and realised we have just ticked over 60 positive reviews (sitting pretty at 4.8 stars, not that we are bragging). Reading through them got us thinking about why online reviews are so important for local shops like ours.

The Elephant in the Room: Fake Reviews

Let us not beat around the bush. The internet is full of fake reviews. We have all seen those massive online retail platforms where a generic toaster suddenly has ten thousand five-star reviews written by bots. It makes it very hard to trust what you read online.

However, Google Reviews are a slightly different beast.

While no system is completely perfect, faking reviews on Google is significantly harder than on retail sites because leaving a review requires a registered Google account. For local, independent businesses, the reviews you see on Google are overwhelmingly written by real people from your local community.

When you read a review on our page from Laurence saying, "Paul is a great bike mechanic, brilliantly solved three bike oddities and handled the routine stuff impeccably well", or Cas mentioning we went "above and beyond to help me to get the bike that I wanted and a brilliant deal/setup"... those are real local riders talking about their actual experiences in our workshop.

The Starting Point, Not the End Point

Great reviews are the ultimate filter. If a shop has a terrible rating, you know to steer clear. If they have a great rating, they definitely deserve to be on your shortlist.

But here is the secret: reviews are your starting point, not the end point.

Five stars on a screen cannot fit a bike to your exact measurements. A glowing paragraph cannot check your suspension sag or recommend the perfect saddle for your sit bones. A great review tells you that a shop is worth visiting, but the real test is what happens when you walk through the door.

Do they listen to what kind of riding you actually do? Do they insist on setting the bike up for you before you leave? Are they as interested in fixing your old winter hack as they are in selling you a shiny new carbon race bike?

That is the stuff that turns a first time buyer into a lifelong customer.

So, do your research, read the Google reviews, and then come in and put us to the test in person!

And hey, if you are a customer of the shop, and haven't yet given us a review on google, what you waiting for? 😉
