The Malvern Hills In Winter

Don't Hang It Up! Why Winter Riding in Malvern is Ace

Posted on: | Category:

It’s tempting, isn’t it? The days are shorter, the sofa is comfy, and the bike starts giving you that "are you sure?" look. But here's the secret: winter riding around Malvern is an absolute treat.

The mud, the crisp air, the quiet trails, and the post-ride brew (or pint) just feel more earned. The hills have a totally different-but-brilliant vibe. Whether you're on a mountain bike, gravel bike, or road machine, this is our guide to making the most of it.

The Off-Road Lowdown: Mud, Views & Good Manners

Winter is when the Malvern Hills get really special for MTB and gravel. Once the summer crowds are gone, it feels like you've got the place to yourself.

  • The Vibe: We're not a gnarly downhill park. The riding here has been described as "alpine in character," and that's spot on. It's all about punchy climbs, contouring singletrack that clings to the side of the hills, and those incredible, 360-degree views you get when the trees are bare.
  • The Dirt: This is the season of what we affectionately call "proper Malvern mud." Some of the singletrack can get boggy, and a few trails even feel like you're riding down a stream (you know the ones!). But on a crisp, frosty morning, those same trails can be as tacky as you like—that perfect "hero dirt."
  • The Golden Rule: The hills are for everyone. We share the bridleways with walkers, dog-walkers, and horse riders. A friendly "hello," a bell, and slowing down when you pass is just how we do it. It keeps everyone happy and keeps us all welcome.

The Road Riding Report: Quiet Lanes & Icy Cautions

On the road bike, winter is all about exploring those quiet lanes. The summer traffic is a distant memory, and you can spend hours winding through the Teme Valley or across into Herefordshire, enjoying the big, crisp skies.

There’s no better way to stay warm than tackling a proper climb, and we’ve got plenty of those! A winter ascent of the Beacon will definitely get the blood pumping.

  • Our Big Local Tip: Be very careful with frost. The steep, narrow lanes around the hills (especially on the north-facing shaded bits) can be treacherous. Black ice loves to hide in the shaded dips and under trees, long after the sun has come out. If the car windscreen was icy, take it easy on the descents and stick to the gritted roads if you're unsure.

Our Top Tips for Winter Prep

Getting your kit and bike sorted is the key to a good winter. Being cold and wet is miserable, but being warm and protected is brilliant.

1. Your Bike

  • Lights, Lights, Lights! This is non-negotiable. The light fades incredibly fast in the valleys. A good set of "see-with" lights for the front and a bright "be-seen" rear light are essential, even for daytime rides.
  • Mudguards: Your back, and anyone you ride with, will thank you. For road and gravel bikes, a full set of mudguards is the biggest winter upgrade you can make. For MTBs, a 'fender' on the fork and a rear guard will stop the worst of it.
  • Tyres: Don't try and ride on your summer race slicks. Switch to a specific winter road tyre with more grip and puncture protection. For MTB, it's time for a more aggressive tread that can dig in and find grip in the mud.
  • Clean & Lube: The grit and mud will destroy your drivetrain. Give your bike a quick rinse and re-lube after every wet ride. It’ll save you a fortune in the long run. Our workshop team sees the painful results of winter neglect every day!

2. Your Kit

  • Layer Up: Three thin layers are always warmer than one thick one. A good merino or synthetic base layer to wick sweat, a fleece or jersey for insulation, and a windproof or waterproof shell on top.
  • Look After Your Ends: Your hands, feet, and head feel the cold first. Good waterproof gloves, thermal socks (and overshoes for the roadies), and a thin cap or buff under your helmet are game-changers.
  • Be Seen: It's not just about the dark. In the flat, grey light of a winter afternoon, a bit of hi-vis colour on your jacket or helmet makes a huge difference.

Winter riding isn't about smashing PBs. It's about adventure, staying fit, and enjoying the hills in a different light.

See you on the trails (or lanes)!
